From Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River to the winding creeks and sprawling swamps, a diverse array of fish resulting from assorted aquatic habitats call Illinois home. The University of Illinois Press has released An Atlas of Illinois Fishes, the first in 40 years to detail the aquatic creatures swimming throughout the state’s waterways.

An Atlas of Illinois Fishes combines natural history with a nature guide to provide readers with an unmatched resource based on extensive biological data collected by scientists since the 1850s. Maps, photographs and comprehensive descriptions detail each of Illinois’ 217 current and extinct species.

Naturalists, scientists, anglers and anyone interested in Illinois fishing can appreciate the colorful pages and details of this updated atlas. Various sources contributed to the imagery showcasing the vast array of fish throughout the Prairie State – from the most common, the gizzard shad, to the rarest, the endangered taillight shiner.
