The Spittler family farm spans four generations in Marshall. So, it’s no wonder their foray into food and hospitality has been perfectly tied to the needs of the local community, culminating in The Silo, an alehouse and eatery.

Co-owner Hannah Spittler sees freshness and service at the heart of everything they do, and the proof is in how word spreads. People from miles around journey to The Silo to experience a wonderful meal and comfortable camaraderie.

“I truly believe we have the very best staff,” Spittler says. “They truly care about our guests, and that makes such a difference. People love the food and the staff, and they are quick to go tell their stories.”

The journey to open The Silo started, as Spittler says, with a $40 tent and a smoker at Marshall Autumn Fest. The festival stand led to a food truck, which grew into a brick-and-mortar deli and meat market, Roosters Farm Market. In 2022, they opened The Silo, with both food businesses operating in the same building on North Michigan Avenue.

The Silo features a wide menu variety with notable items including the T-Rex, a loaded baked potato with butter, sour cream, fresh cheddar cheese, and heaps of pulled pork and barbecue sauce.

“It’s gotten popular all over the country, but it’s still why people are coming here,” Spittler says with a laugh.

The ribeye sandwiches and steaks are also fan favorites, as is the Nacho Mamas Nachos, a delicious shareable pan of nachos served on a pizza tray.

“The staff will run these nachos out, and people definitely have an ‘oh-my-gosh’ moment in the dining room,” Spittler says.

When she thinks about the wild ride of the past two years ramping up The Silo, Spittler can still remember opening night, when she first heard people laughing and enjoying themselves in the dining room.

“It’s humbling, and it’s exciting to see people driving from other places to come see us,” she says. “It makes us want to continue to push hard to be our best.”
