1. Step Back in Time
The town’s heritage is fully revealed in the lovingly restored and maintained historic 19th-century homes nestled along tree-lined avenues. Residents recommend visitors take an unhurried drive through the neighborhoods or enjoy a stroll through the attractive downtown that’s just steps away. For an authentic taste of history, visitors can book a stay in the charming Central Schoolhouse Inn housed in Geneseo’s first public school, which was constructed in 1856.
2. Delve Into Local History
The Geneseo Historical Museum is home to permanent displays and special presentations that provide a window into the settlement and growth of the country’s heartland. Situated in a 27-room Italianate mansion, informative displays and thousands of artifacts showcase the town’s history, which began when eight families from Genesee County in New York arrived in 1836 and founded a colony dedicated to bringing education and religion to the then-remote region.

3. Murals Paint Geneseo’s History
A host of colorful murals decorate downtown buildings as artistic representations of the town’s past and present. The ongoing Geneseo Mural Project is described as a way for people to publicly celebrate, share and showcase the town’s past, present and future. The murals honor the town’s founding, musical heritage and Harold Neumann, a local aviation pioneer. More murals are planned.
4. Theater in the Round
Theater lovers will appreciate the Richmond Hill Players performances. For more than 50 years, the 150 theater members have staged a multitude of productions in a converted dairy barn that offers a unique in-the-round experience to audiences. Each season offers six plays, ranging from comedies to dramas, running from April through November.
5. Search for Treasures
Whether you’re an avid collector or just a curious browser, there will be plenty of items deserving your attention in C&S Antique Mall, where the motto is “Our Place Is Where Old Is a Good Thing.” Booths from more than 55 dealers pack two floors of a renovated warehouse, offering antiques, collectibles and unique gifts.

6. Arts and Crafts Galore
For fans of the visual arts and crafts, the Geneseo Art League and Gallery presents the creative work of regional artists, as well as events and special exhibits. You can roam the rooms of Smith Studio & Gallery where you’ll find artwork and unusual gifts created by a multitude of professional artists. Members at Rutabaga Art share their passions and creations while supporting art-related activities for the community. These galleries are located in Geneseo’s downtown and also offer classes for children and adults.
7. Take a Break for a Brew
The original Geneseo Brewing Co. was established in 1884, and today, a new generation of brewers is rebuilding the tradition in a historic downtown building. In addition to crafting award-winning local ales and lagers, the brewpub offers a wide selection of meal options to pair with its craft beers and laid-back atmosphere.

8. Shop Until You Drop
For shoppers looking for an out-of-mall adventure, head to downtown Geneseo’s State Street, where many small shops and boutiques await. Enjoy lunch or dinner downtown on State Street. Raelyn’s Pub & Eatery specializes in casual dining in a relaxed setting, including an outdoor space. The Cellar, which opened in 1960, is nestled in the lower level of a 130-year-old building and known for its cuisine and candlelit ambiance.
