Southern Illinois – and as far north as the Interstate 70 corridor in the eastern part of the state – will have prime viewing of the total solar eclipse on April 8.

Looking for the perfect place to catch a view? Thirty-one Illinois state parks are in the eclipse’s path of totality, offering spectators a fabulous spot to take in the sight. Carbondale is the largest city in the viewing area, with downtown expected to see about four minutes and nine seconds of total darkness around 2 p.m.

Don’t forget to secure a pair of solar viewing glasses for this special occasion. It’ll be another 20 years before the next eclipse is visible from Illinois.
