This year, celebrate Independence Day weekend with family-friendly activities and an impressive fireworks display at the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular on beautiful Carlyle Lake. The event also includes a Dam Jam featuring a full day of live music before the fireworks, as well as a Beach Blast featuring activities throughout the day, including volleyball tournaments, a sandcastle-building contest, games and more. The celebration wraps up with the spectacular fireworks show, which can be viewed by boat on the lake or from the shore at recreation areas.

Patriotic Freedom Festival

July 1, 2026, Elizabeth

Come dressed in your patriotic best to Elizabeth, where there will be an award for the most patriotic outfit plus army displays, live music, and tasty food and beverages. Kids can enjoy face painting and endless fun on the bounce house. The highlight of the event is an U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute jump into Terrapin Park at 7 p.m., and the night concludes with a spectacular firework display.

History Comes Alive

History Comes Alive returns to Springfield for its 16th year this summer. Taking place at participating sites throughout the city, the event welcomes visitors to immerse themselves in the home and life of Abraham Lincoln. A free trolley service takes participants to historic sites, including the Lincoln Home, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site and the Lincoln Tomb. The event also features live performances and daily demonstrations, reenactments of Lincoln’s most famous speeches, a weekly flag-lowering ceremony at the Lincoln Tomb, a Civil War Union infantry march, soldier musket firing and more. History Cooks will also return to the Lincoln Home Historic Site, where visitors can enjoy live cooking demonstrations by local chefs each week. Illinois Shakespeare Festival

Illinois Shakespeare Festival

The 2022 Illinois Shakespeare Festival will showcase two of the Bard’s most famous productions, as well as a play featuring William Shakespeare himself.

Presented each year by the Center for the Performing Arts at Illinois State University, the Illinois Shakespeare Festival has been a staple in Bloomington since 1978.

This family-friendly event at Shenandoah Riding Center in Galena provides a unique and interactive opportunity to learn about life on the farm. The small breakfast item known as the bagel is recognized in a huge way each July at Bagelfest in Mattoon. Since 1986, Lender’s Bagels factory has been attracting thousands of people to its bagel celebration, and the host likes to throw a good party.

Bagelfest hosts the World’s Largest Bagel Breakfast, which hands out tens of thousands of bagels, complete with cream cheese, honey, butter and jelly. Also among the event’s activities are a parade, a beauty pageant, concerts, vendors and a carnival. There’s even a Beautiful Bagel Baby contest for kids up to age 5.

The annual Tacos y Tamales Festival in Chicago celebrates traditional Latin American culture and cuisine with a three-day lineup of authentic flavors and live entertainment. Held over the third weekend in July, the block party-style street festival is modeled after the traditional open-air markets in Mexico and Central America known as tianguis. Vendors will offer delicious tacos and tamales from different regions of Latin America, all prepared with the freshest ingredients, in addition to handmade tortillas and beverages including cervezas, micheladas, margaritas and more. Other festivities include Latin music and dance performances and unique handmade artwork and crafts from local artisans. The three-day festival hosts several local eateries competing for the coveted title in addition to two stages of live music, arts and crafts vendors, and an action-packed kids’ zone. The event takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 2000 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago. Bos Brothers Old Fashioned Threshing Bee

Enjoy the 10th annual working farm show, where there is something for the whole family to enjoy. Watch and learn as wheat is harvested, threshed, milled and made into homemade bread. John Deere Unstyled Tractors will be working in the fields throughout the weekend. Other demonstrations running will be rock crushing, blacksmithing, sawmilling, wood turning, rug weaving, basket weaving, pottery throwing and many more. Learn how to macrame and take home some fresh honey and maple syrup. On Sunday, a church service will be held in the barn at 9:30am. Stick around for the tractor pull Sunday afternoon with Back Road Pullers. Food and modern restrooms are available on the grounds.

Parking and admission are free. Show hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Show demonstrations will end at 3 p. m. on Sunday, tractor pull will continue to run later. On the last Saturday of July, pop in to the Pana Popcorn Festival for a day packed with family fun at Kitchell Park. Powered by the Pana Parks Revitalization Committee, the event will kick off with an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in the historic Chautauqua pavilion, followed by a Popcorn Princess contest and dog show and contest. Throughout the day, enjoy food trucks, craft vendors, live music, a jeep and car show, sporting events, Captain Kitchell’s Never Never Land, and free popcorn, courtesy of Great Western Products.
