PORK-apalooza Kicks Off October Pork Month

It looks like a sizzling start to October Pork Month this year.

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) celebrates the next four weeks with the introduction of a special Pork-apalooza contest, which delivers free pork to winners.

Pork-apalooza features a mobile scratch-to-win trivia game. Players simply text the word PORK to 43817 on a mobile device to initiate the game. The contest takes place from Oct. 7 through Oct. 31.

If contestants correctly answer pork industry trivia questions, they can win free bacon, free pork loins and a free pork tailgating package worth $30 at participating Illinois County Market stores.

“Pork Month is an opportunity to refresh the connection consumers have with pig farmers,” said Erin Cleary, IPPA director of marketing. “What better way than to win free pork.”

October became known as Pork Month years ago as hogs historically went to market during that time. Hogs now are marketed throughout the year, so October Pork Month evolved into a time to thank hog farmers and to promote the products they produce.

For example, the seven most common cuts of pork are about 16 percent leaner than they were 20 years ago, according to IPPA.
