1. Purchase your poinsettias from a local nursery.

Purchase a healthy, high-quality plant from a nursery. It should have dark green foliage down to the soil line, with the bracts (red, modified leaves) completely colored. Avoid purchasing poinsettias displayed in paper or plastic sleeves, which may cause quicker deterioration. If your poinsettias do have a sleeve, remove it immediately when you arrive home.
