Beyond the 17-year cicada invasion earlier this year, insects as food continue to make headlines as InnovaFeed and ADM announced the construction of the world’s largest insect protein facility in Decatur.

Construction is targeted to begin in 2021, pending permits and approvals, and will be completed in two phases. The facility is expected to create more than 280 direct and 400 indirect jobs by the second construction phase. Once both phases are complete, the plant’s target annual production capacity is about 66,138 tons (60,000 metric tons) of animal feed protein.

Investments in this industry bolster economic growth and job creation while strengthening the state’s position as a center of innovative and sustainable agriculture. Growing demand for insect protein in animal feed could allow the market to reach 1 million tons in 2027.

InnovaFeed currently operates two insect production facilities in France. The Decatur facility represents the first international project.

The Decatur plant construction will use an innovative model of industrial collaboration, already demonstrated in other facilities, enabling the company to produce the insect protein with the lowest carbon footprint, according to a corporate news release. It will be co-located with ADM’s Decatur corn complex, allowing ADM to provide corn byproducts for the insect rearing process directly. The collaborative operational model enables the facility to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80%.

  • In Chinatown the dehydrated bugs have been on the market for decades. This summer of 2024 the cicadas in Chicago land will be plentiful, good for the business.

  • There is a tornado coming to Decatur to clean up the bug problem. This is just stupid. Good job ADM…Please!!! Will Claus be coming to cut the ribbon for the grand opening. The Great Bug BBQ.

      • You are welcome to my share. There is plenty of meat to go around. They just have to stop killing everything due to fake flu’s. Killing livestock is part of this evil plan. There are already insects in foods at the grocery store. You just have to read ingredients and be able to identify the names they use. It won’t say crickets or meal-worms. Instead maybe Acheta Domesticus, Tenebrio molitor L. 1758; Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae.

  • “Animal feed”…hmm…at the current rate of inflation, how many people on fixed incomes will be reduced to eating dog food by 2030?

  • I am sickened by this. The WEF wants the world to eat bugs while they eat what they choose. All in the name of carbon.
