Head to Geneseo, Illinois, this Fourth of July to take a patriotic stroll through the park while viewing hundreds of American flags on display at the Geneseo Aisle of Flags. Each Independence Day, Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the city honors its local veterans with more than 900 flags placed throughout Geneseo City Park.

The tradition began more than 40 years ago, when the women of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary were looking for something to do with their loved ones’ casket flags. Today, hundreds of flags are donated by families of deceased veterans with a connection to Geneseo, including many casket flags from veterans in all branches of service. The flags are displayed, weather permitting, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on each holiday with the help of many community volunteers.
